Religion 143 - Religion in Ancient India

(Offered as RELI 143 and ASLC 143) This course explores central ideas and practices in the religious and intellectual traditions of India up until the medieval period. We consider the range of available archeological, art historical, and textual evidence for religion in this period, though the course focuses mostly on texts. We will read the classic religious and philosophical literature of the traditions we now call Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

Students who enroll in this course will likely encounter and be expected to engage in the following intellectual skills, modes of learning, and assessment: Students will engage in learning how to enter into the worlds of the distant past. They will acquire skills in studying material culture, reading difficult primary texts critically and thoughtfully, evaluating scholarly arguments about ancient cultures and ideas, and writing short critical essays.
