Spanish 427 - War and Peace: The Colombian Archive

(Offered as SPAN 427 and LLAS 427) The Colombian war is not only one of the most prolonged wars in Latin American history, but distinctively it has been “a war for peace.” Through a journey through the country’s modern history (1948-2020) the class will explore the paradoxical relationship between war and peace. Our archive will
be diverse, including literary, photographic, cinematographic, artistic, and forensic texts. The class will be
divided into five units: bipartisan violence, guerrilla insurgency, para-militarism, the Peace Treaty and
contemporary social movements. Conducted in Spanish.
Requisite: SPAN 301 or consent of the instructor. Limited to 20 students. Fall Semester: Professor Ferrari.
How to handle overenrollment: Priority will be given to Spanish majors.
Students who enroll in this course will likely encounter and be expected to engage in the following intellectual skills, modes of learning, and assessment: Throughout the semester, the students will work on individual and group projects generating new analytical, expressive and interpretative relationships with the assigned materials. The course will include collaborative projects with Colombian partners.
