Theater and Dance 129H - Dance Technique: Beginning/Intermediate Contemporary Floorwork
TH | 1:05 PM - 2:20 PM
This is a beginning to intermediate level course in contemporary floorwork technique with a primary focus on movement practice. Using the studio as a laboratory, we will learn/revisit fundamentals of moving in and out of the floor with ease, efficiency, and proper alignment. Utilizing the floor and gravity as our dance partners, we will experiment with approaches to floorwork that cultivate groundedness, teach the mechanics of low level movement, and develop the strength, coordination and stamina required. Skill-building will be pursued by traveling across or dimensionally through space (sliding, rolling, going upside down, etc.) while remaining close to the floor. Each class will culminate in phrasework that extends students' ability to seamlessly descend, ascend, and dance along a low-flying continuum. Both codified material and improvisation will be used as modalities for learning. This course may be repeated for credit.
Two class meetings per week. A half-course. Limited to 22 students. Fall semester. Teaching Fellow Kalaitzidis.
How to handle overenrollment: Priority given to THDA majors, then a mix of experience levels, other majors and class years.
Students who enroll in this course will likely encounter and be expected to engage in the following intellectual skills, modes of learning, and assessment: This course will involve regular attendance and class participation, class discussion, reading, and possible viewing and writing assignments.
