Why do we move the way we move? How is each and every body different in the ways we move? This course is an introduction to the structures and functions of our musculoskeletal human anatomies, and to basic principles of kinesiology as applied in our movement, dance, athletic, and somatic practices. Thwarting the notion that our bodies comprise individuated and categorizable parts, particular emphasis will be placed on a holistic, living, and ever-changing approach to the study of our bodies' movement capabilities and the uniqueness of each student's embodied experience. Class time will be divided between instruction in anatomy, and hands-on activities designed for experiential and tactile learning through moving, dancing, drawing, sculpting, etc. In-class work will be supplemented by readings, journaling, physical practice, writing, and research.  The overall goal of this course is to develop a more sensed and sensitive understanding of our own moving bodies, while aiming to alleviate unnecessary tension, improve efficiency and performance, and prevent injury. Students with no prior dance background are enthusiastically welcome.
