Designed for advanced Division II and Division III students, this course will critically look at the relationship between the environment (natural and built) and communities. Issues of culture, history, economics and politics will be considered as students explore the meanings of the concepts of environment, environmentalism, community, and others. Students must be working on a major research project related to the topic of the course, or propose a research topic. In the first part of the course, we will read theoretical materials concerning key social issues in environmental studies, such as climate change, development versus conservation, community-based management of natural resources, environmental influences on conflict, among others. For most of the course, students will plan and facilitate class activities either singly or in small groups based on their own interests and research projects. Division III students should plan on sharing parts of their projects for peer feedback.
