How does the human perception of sound influence our relationships with our environments? How does sound contribute to "sense of place"? What roles do digital technologies play in forming and manipulating sonic experience? What concepts and practices do we engage to structure sonic environments--real, or imagined--or to deconstruct them? This cross-disciplinary exploration combines ethnography, experimental measurement, and subjective testing with textual/media research. Authors and artists whose work we examine may include Keith Basso, Trevor Cox, Veit Erlmann, Steven Feld, Clifford Geertz, Gabriella Giannachi, Andy Goldsworthy, David Goodman, Mnica Gudemos, Don Ihde, Victoria Newhouse, No?madak Tx, Thomas Riedelsheimer, Michael Shanks, Dan Sperber, James Tenney, and Emily Thompson, among others. We will also read from "Music, Cognition and Computerized Sound" (Cook, Ed. 1999), "Audio Culture" (Cox & Warner, Eds. 2004),"The Sound Studies Reader" (Sterne, Ed. 2012). Course participants draw on their personal specializations, and blend scholarly investigation, scientific methodology, and creative production.
