This course offers a broad survey of skills and tools used in field-based environmental investigations. Students will gain hands-on experience with methods for collecting data from abiotic and biotic ecosystem components. Specific topics covered will include land-use mapping and spatiotemporal analysis; water, soil, and air quality monitoring; wildlife and vegetation surveying; and carbon storage and decomposition rate estimation. Additional topics will include experimental design, data analysis, and science communication. Class meetings will occur primarily in the field, and assignments will help prepare students to address a range of environmental issues.
Course limited to sophomores, juniors and seniors; Prereq: 8 credits in environmental studies.
