This course examines thematic issues in East Asian politics, including the formation of nations and states, democracy, authoritarianism, political parties, political economy, gender, and social movements. The emphasis in this course pivots on understanding theoretical and conceptual issues that are anchored in East Asian politics but that are generally pertinent to comparative politics in the world. The course has two goals: (1) to enable students to gain an empirical and conceptual understanding of the political dynamics of the region and (2) to prepare students to address and debate theoretical questions through completion of an original research proposal.
