This course examines the science of reading, emphasizing empirical research, theoretical models, and best practices for teaching literacy. The focus is on understanding reading development, language processing, and the implications of structured literacy instruction. Students explore the Simple View of Reading, Scarborough’s Rope, and learn strategies to address reading difficulties, particularly for students with dyslexia and other language-based learning disabilities. The course aligns with Massachusetts DESE literacy standards and prepares participants to apply evidence-based instructional practices. Restrictions: Juniors and seniors only.
