COMM Seniors enrolled in the colloquium will take part in a community service learning project in which they will create, practice, and then implement a media literacy unit for local sixth graders. Students will work with the instructor for the first half of the semester to create readings, exercises, and activities designed to inspire local young people to develop critical thinking about our topic, media violence. Then, students will travel to local sixth grade classrooms to implement the unit, facilitating dialogue with the sixth graders on the topic. Students will reflect in writing on their own learning as well as on their interactions with the sixth graders and will also use the Honors Colloquium in the second half of the semester to share notes with other participants on how the unit is going. No prior experience is needed, but a desire to work with early adolescents and the community at large is appreciated.
COMM Seniors with consent of Instructor.
