This course offers a general introduction to the study of Indigenista Literature in Latin America, with a particular attention to the Andean countries and Mexico. We will critically analyze how from Columbus times to present, and from different literary genres (i.e. chronicle, short story, poetry, novel, and testimony), Latin American indigenous populations have been portrayed, and very often misrepresented. In addition, different indigenous social problems such as poverty, economic exploitation and racial discrimination will be addressed.
