This is a graded introduction to the Communication major, designed to welcome first year students into the major and inform them of opportunities for their advancement in the department and beyond. The course introduces students to the five subject areas offered in the major and provides a brief overview of the field of communication as well as the major issues and topics that motivate the inquiries conducted in courses and in research. Finally, the course identifies and helps students access the opportunities to enrich their experience in their coming years at the University by learning about various campus resources and working closely with fellow students to produce applied projects.

Comm 191 seminar is the Department of Communication's introduction to the major for newly admitted, first year Comm majors. Students will learn about five areas in the field of communication as they pertain to the major:

-Interpersonal Communication and Culture
-Media and Popular Culture Studies
-Media, Technology, Society
-Rhetoric and Performance Studies
-Film Studies.

The seminar will grant students the opportunity to engage on a more personal level with these areas of study as well as discuss your own ideas in class as a group, through Moodle assignments, and most importantly, through the production of an applied project. By ?applied? we mean:

1. a concrete, creative project that
2. expresses an idea in a form related one or more of the major areas of study and
3. communicates it effectively to others

In addition to becoming exposed to potential project skills (e.g., writing, reading, expressive speech, critique, video and/or sound recording and editing, blog posting, visual design, interviewing, navigating the library, navigating the web, surveys), students will also learn group skills, time management, getting around campus, a little about college survival, identifying areas of the field of greatest interest to you, and aptitudes you might not even know you have. Comm 191 is a chance to explore, experiment, try again, and establish a foundation for a successful college experience.

NOTE: All Comm majors will take this seminar first semester. The students in the Comm Majors RAP will have special sections taught in the residential area.

This year?s Comm Majors RAP seminar instructor is a doctoral student with an entertainment business and media studies perspective looking forward to share his insights about the many different ways we can study (and think of) communication.
