This course is the first in a two-semester series. This course is designed to provide students with theoretical and practical knowledge related to measuring children?s free-living physical activity and sedentary behavior in unstructured environments. Students will learn about and become proficient with direct observation methods, accelerometry and anthropometric measurements. Becoming proficient in these methodologies will allow students to continue in the spring semester (Physical Activity Research in Youth II) with hands-on data collection efforts and/or work in other laboratory and community settings. Student work in this course will contribute to our development of new observation methods, better use of accelerometer technology, including research-grade devices and consumer activity monitors. Students will also learn best practices regarding human subjects? related research and the behavioral theory that is the foundation for using wearable technologies to increase physical activity behaviors.
No pre-requisites, open to all disciplines. Application and in-person interview required to receive enrollment permission from instructor. Any undergraduate student in good academic standing (GPA > 2.0).
