This course prepares students to teach jazz combo, big band and improvisation in middle and high school. Students will learn the fundamentals of jazz performance, from instrumentation to setup to rehearsal techniques to concert planning. Additionally, students will learn the fundamentals of jazz improvisation, including jazz theory, ear training, scales, patterns and repertoire. By the end of the course students will have a reference binder that will cover all basic elements necessary to run a successful jazz program.

Prerequisites: First-year aural skills, musicianship and theory courses.
This course is open to BMUS-Music & BA-Music majors only.
Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
