This course concentrates on the issues involved in developing music curricula for students in grades K-12 and in music teacher education programs. Together we will explore what we teach, why we teach, and how we teach through historical, philosophical, psychological, and sociological lenses, and gain a deeper understanding of educational policy and its impact on school curricula. Students will examine and evaluate existing frameworks, assessment tools, and instructional strategies; complete fieldwork; and design their own individualized curriculum unit/project.
Open to Graduate students only. Students in this course will be participating in the New York Professional Outreach Program (NYPOP) on March 23-24, 2018. Under the guidance of a UMass faculty member, students travel to New York City to gain a deeper understanding of their field and of humanistic and artistic work in the context of cultural institutions, businesses, and non-profit organizations. Students have the freedom to stay anywhere in the New York City or the surrounding area that meets their needs and budgets. HFA subsidizes the bus rental making the transportation cost $25 per student per trip. On average, students report spending $50-100 on hotels each trip and $40-60 on food. Please mark this on your calendar. More details will be provided in the course syllabus.
