This course is designed to introduce majors to the wide range of topics and approaches included within contemporary German Studies. With the help of departmental faculty, we will get a taste of representative works from different periods of German cultural history, including texts, visual arts and music. We will also explore how scholars in different disciplines, such as history and cultural studies in the humanities, and anthropology and political science in the social sciences approach the relatively new, interdisciplinary field of German Studies. Conducted in English.
This course is designed to introduce students to the various folktale traditions of Germany and Scandinavia, while focusing on upper-level writing and analytic skills. Beginning with Germany's well-known Grimms' collection, we will proceed through representative tales from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland. Throughout the semester we will develop the writing and analytic skills required to analyze and interpret the social, historical, and artistic aspects of the folktales.Fulfills Junior Year Writing Requirement.
