This course is designed for undergraduate students in the Department of Communication Disorders. The course content serves as an introduction to language structure, processing, and variation in the context of communication disorders. It serves as preparation for the study of language development and disorders throughout the lifespan. Through a series of case studies, students will learn to analyze and describe typical and impaired language abilities, with particular focus on the production of words, sentences, and conversational interactions. We will also study cultural variation in the use of language, including dialectal variation and multilingualism. Throughout the course, we will learn about research tools and methods that are used to study typical and impaired language.
