Like many inter/disciplinary fields, both English and WGSS have struggled to frame their subjects and objects of knowledge in constitutively intersectional ways. That is: without continually reverting to cis White heteronormativity as the ?universal? default. By centering diverse expressions of Black feminist lives and thought, this course will explore the deep interconnections between storytelling, writing and knowledge production, asking foundational questions such as: What is the relationship between embodiment and bodies of work? What does it mean to create truly intersectional feminist knowledge? What are best practices for interdisciplinary inquiries? What are the constraints and possibilities of genre (how does the medium shape the message)? You will analyze and write in genres that may include book and/or popular culture reviews; personal essays; creative, scholarly or social media; grant proposals or other professional writing. You will also learn tools of research-related communication used in all fields, such as: abstracts, organization of knowledge, uses of evidence, and compilation of archival and bibliographic resources. Students will plan, develop, and revise a final project on a topic of their choosing.
Fulfills Junior Year Writing Requirement.
