This course introduces students to the importance of structured, disciplined planning techniques for the creation of water resources plans and for managing water in today?s quickly changing environment. The course discusses the history of water planning and management in the US and the challenges encountered when providing reliable water resources for growing populations as our climate changes over time. The course includes exercises that require students to develop water resources plans, with an emphasis on team building, performance metrics, establishing goals and objectives, generating alternative, evaluating alternatives, multi-objective analysis, public involvement, engaging stakeholders, and creating user-friendly models used in negotiations. The course includes critiques of existing water resources plans for major cities in the US and a series of interviews with water managers. The course places emphasis on the practical application of the techniques discussed as applied case studies of cities facing water planning and management challenges, including climate change. Dynamic simulation software is used for the class exercises and projects.
