This new course is a collaboration between the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and the Spanish and Portuguese Studies at UMass. It combines community engagement, translation and storytelling in order to foreground the importance of multilingualism and the challenge and beauty of growing with more than one language and one culture. The course will explore some of the ways in which Spanish-English/Portuguese-English translations of children?s literature and bilingual storytelling may be applied to facilitate inclusive public storytime programs that celebrate linguistic diversity. The aim of the course is to provide students with tools and skills to inspire storytelling across languages, engage with the local Spanish-speaking and Portuguese-speaking communities and train prospective social storytellers. The Museum will provide workshop certificates to students who successfully complete the training.
