This course offers a historical and political economy approach to the analysis of growth and structural transformation of African economies. It examines the challenges as well as opportunities facing African countries in their efforts to accelerate growth, reduce poverty and inequality, and maximize the gains from integration in the global economy. It takes stock of the record of the continent's growth and economic transformation, highlighting successes and lessons learned from past policy experimentation. The course stresses the distribution of gains from growth and transformation, identifying the winners and losers, and the economic, social and political factors that drive change and those that retard it. The analysis in the course provides tools for an exploration of the prospects for acceleration of Africa?s growth and structural transformation going forward. (Gen. Ed. SB, DG)
