For many new students, college is all about freedom, about the sudden profusion of choices and the lack of restrictions on how and what to choose. This can be exciting -- but also overwhelming. Fortunately, you're not alone. There are mentors and advisors. There are expectations, requirements, and milestones. And there's duty: to yourself and others. This course enacts a method of being thoughtful, involved, and responsible in making your way through higher education. It presents college in three dimensions -- space, time, and purpose -- and goes week by week through a series of topics, from taking care of yourself and being involved on campus to managing your time, planning your curriculum, and being intentional about your goals. The idea is not to resolve all the issues of college at once but to practice a way of thinking and being together that will help you in the weeks, months, and years to come. There will be guided discussions, weekly exercises, some reading, and three short essays to turn in.
