As you transition to life at UMass, it is important to understand how to take care of yourself and your mental health. In this course, we will explore important resources on campus and methods of self-care through story-telling, discussion, and personal reflection. By better understanding the necessity of self-care using a critical lens, you will be better equipped to make the transition into college life. These experiences will ultimately lead to a better understanding of your academic path and professional goals

First-year (R1ST) The Reflective Educator: Thriving Through Transition

The transition from high school to college comes with many challenges: newfound independence, self-directed learning, and an abundance of new experiences to explore. This first-year seminar will enable students to thrive through their transition, integrating mindfulness, self-reflection, and intentional exploration into their first semester. Students will engage in weekly mindfulness exercises that build a healthy routine that serves to sustain their well-being, enhance their self-awareness, and improve their time-management skills. Through the development of a collaborative, supportive, and constructive learning environment, students will be invited to form strong peer relationships, in addition to leveraging their instructor and campus partners as resources throughout their time in the course and beyond.

Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
