This course will cover the basic principles of memory and the key research findings that demonstrate these principles. You will learn to distinguish the different forms of memory, ranging from acquiring a skill such as the ability to play an instrument to the "mental time travel" that allows you to vividly re-live past experiences. We will learn about the factors that influence memory accuracy and explore ways in which memory can sometimes provide a substantially misleading characterization of past experiences ("illusory memory"). We will also cover influential theories of memory and discuss how they have been tested experimentally. Finally, we will survey the current state of knowledge regarding the brain structures and mechanisms that support memory abilities. Satisfies Criteria 2 and 3 of the Integrative Experience requirement for PSYCH majors.
Open to PSYCH and Neuroscience majors. PSYCH 241 and 314, 315, or 330
