This course introduces students to statistical software and visualization methods in the context of applications with high social impact. It is designed for students with limited or no background in statistics, who might be interested in learning more about statistics before deciding about future study. It is vertically-integrated to also show students the potential of more advanced statistical methods. iSWIM meets concurrently with one of the 4 weekly contact hours of aSWIM, Advanced Statistics with Impact Mindset, so that students will interact with statistical and applied concepts and results through students later in their statistical learning. The methods will be introduced in the context of research data related to some subset of disparities in policing, legal cynicism and violence, global health, STEM student success, segregation, inequality in access to nature, political beliefs and extremism, and disparities in college sex and dating.
