This course counts towards the Certificate in Translation and Interpreting Studies and includes a service-learning component. The course is organized around key social domains where interpreting and translation are essential, such as education, healthcare, law, diplomacy/politics, and humanitarian work. Special topics will explore how interpreters? work intersects with issues such as emotions, technology, and gender dynamics. Students will develop an understanding of the complexity of interpreting across various settings, build relevant vocabulary and skills in English and other languages, and engage in practical exercises including written translation, sight translation, and different modes of interpreting. This course is officially designated as a Civic Engagement and Service-Learning course and is endorsed by the Office of Civic Engagement and Service-Learning (CESL) at UMass. A portion of the course is designed to give students the opportunity to participate in a service project outside the classroom guided by input from a community partner and oriented toward the public good. Over the course of the semester, students are expected to build a collaborative working relationship with their partner.
