This course is designed to introduce students to a maternal and child public health perspective, which is focused on identifying and meeting the needs of women, infants, children, adolescents, and families. We will examine problems, programs, and policies related to these populations, with an emphasis on the United States. We will investigate select current topics in-depth (such as preterm birth, contraception, and maternity care), as well as cross-cutting issues such as the impact of racism and poverty on the health of families. We will also consider interaction with the healthcare system at different stages of life.
