This course orients music analysts to the process of meaning-making via semiotics, or the study of signification. Starting with foundational readings in semiotics, we will then explore topics in musical narrative, performance and analysis, and music?s role in the formation of social relationships. Through and alongside our readings, we will regularly put theory into practice, with one focal analysis and one or more readings per week. Students will develop their own final research paper based on their own interests and in consultation with the professor and present their work in the last three weeks of class.
This course is open to Music Graduate students in any concentration. This course is primarily for Graduate Music students
Open to Undergraduate Music Majors who have successfully completed MUSIC 213 and 350, with instructor permission.
Undergrads must submit departmental Course Enrollment Request to request enrollment.
