To give students a deeper understanding of families' experiences, and to provide families with much needed support, students will provide home-based respite care to a family raising a child, adolescent or adult with an intellectual or developmental disability. Students will learn about the nature and function of respite care through assigned readings and class discussion. Students will receive training on best practices in providing care to a person with a disability in the home context.
This course requires participation in one 50 minute class meeting (worth 1 credit) as well as 3 additional hours of field experience in the community (worth 1 credit) each week. At the beginning of the semester, you will be assigned one weekday (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) from 4pm to 7pm to complete your service learning hours. Students must have at least one of these days available in their schedule in order to participate in this class
