This is an experiential course that will explore the opportunities and challenges presented by generative AI and its impact on society. The primary focus of this course is on investigating how gen AI, as a public interest technology, can enhance human cognitive interactions with the world; it is also focused on increasing awareness of the potential ways it could de- or downgrade it. Students will have the opportunity to develop hands-on experience through prompt-engineering exercises that build gen AI literacy. In tandem with these exercises we will examine traditional ways of knowing and meaning-making, intellectual sovereignty, and historical contexts of technology-induced cognitive transformation. Students will have opportunities to reflect on their experiences and engagements with technology to identify unique challenges and effective techniques to leverage gen AI for a healthy and productive society.
