This seminar provides an introduction to the sociology of gender. The first weeks will focus on foundational theories of gender identity and gender inequality. The bulk of the class will focus on empirical cases that explore how gender organizes work, family, education, and geographical space. We will commit significant time to investigating how gender intersects with race, class, sexuality, and nation. To that end, the course readings will primarily consist of ethnographies in the United States and the postcolonial world.
