The Politics of Storytelling: Provocations and (Im)possibillties A Conversation with Richa Nagar
We are thrilled to welcome Richa Nagar to the Five College community. Please join as we engage with her rich body of work in storytelling, journeying, and translation across borders from Sangtin Yatra/ Playing with Fire (2004) to Khari Nadi/ Salty River (2025). This most recent work revolves around the life writing of Mumtaz Begum, who passed away last month, ten days after the book’s release in her hometown in UP (India). The evening will bring together colleagues and students from across the Five College consortium for a conversation on the politics and ethics of storytelling that transcends borders, languages, and academic form.
Richa Nagar is the inaugural Gloria Steinem ‘56 Endowed Chair in Women and Gender Studies at Smith College. She has published nine books and dozens of essays, articles, plays, and poems (and their translations) in English and Hindi. Her multi-lingual and multi-genre work in transnational feminism and the praxis and poetics of collaboration has evolved across the borders of India, Tanzania, and the USA. This work agitates stabilized ways of knowing and telling through collective creatives to build enduring alliances with people’s struggles for justice. A recipient of numerous awards, including the 2021 International Studies Association’s Global Development Studies Book Award for Hungry Translations and the American Association of Geographers 2019 James Blaut Award for Socialist and Critical Geography, Professor Nagar has held visiting fellowships at universities in India, South Africa and the United States. She is also co-founder of the online journal Agitate! Unsettling Knowledges
This event is co-sponsored by the Five College Women Studies Research Center; the Amherst College Department of Sexuality, Women’s, and Gender Studies; the Mount Holyoke College Departments of Critical Race & Political Economy, Gender Studies, and Sociology and Anthropology; and the UMass Departments of WGSS, Anthropology and the College of Education.
