This course introduces students to the comparative study of religion by focusing on a major theme within two or more religious traditions. Traditions and topics will vary from year to year. In 2014-15 the major traditions will be Christianity and Judaism and the theme will be war. Through a range of classical and modern sources, we will explore the complex ways in which issues in religion relate to the causes and conduct of war. In addition to working with cases presented in class, each student will prepare an independent study project dealing with religious issues at play in a contemporary conflict.
