Architectural Studies 105 - Space in Translation: Introduction to Architectural Design
TU/TH | 1:05 PM - 4:05 PM
(Offered as ARCH 105, ARHA 105) This hands-on design studio will foster innovation as it guides students through the development of architectural ideas. Students will explore the translation of 2d representation to 3d matter in space. Through a series of projects that build on each other, students will develop their own design language and experiment with architecture at several scales. This process will require engagement with a variety of graphic tools and techniques, including drawing and physical model-making to analyze and understand space as they develop skills in architectural representation. Guest critics will attend a review, and students will present their work to design professionals and professors.
No prior experience necessary. All that's needed is a curiosity about the built world, and a desire to consider what might be.
Admissions with consent of the instructor. Limited to 12 students. Fall semester: Lecturer Tess Clancy.
How to handle overenrollment: Priority given to ARCH and ARHA majors
Students who enroll in this course will likely encounter and be expected to engage in the following intellectual skills, modes of learning, and assessment: Creative problem solving, 3D modeling, sketching, and physical model making. Assessment is based on level of exploration, quality of craft, attendance and participation in in-class discussions, openness to feedback and willingness to pursue multiple iterations of designs.
