(Offered as ARCH 272, ARHA 272) In this course, students will study important images (drawings, illustrations, paintings, collages, etc.) from different moments in history in order to understand how architects, designers and artists communicate ideas through representation. Using both familiar and unfamiliar approaches, we will analyze these works and practice using the techniques they employ.

The course will introduce analog design drawing, while also exploring how analog methods can be produced using digital tools (for example a collage in photoshop vs. a physical collage on paper). Readings will include short texts by designers reflecting on their drawing practices as well as practical guides to different workflows and processes.
Through a sequence of exercises and projects, students will develop spatial drawings that combine multiple techniques and media. Topics may include different ways of representing three-dimensional space, constructing light and shadow, organizing multiple drawings on a page, observational and measured sketching, and exploring how drawing can suggest movement and time.

Class meetings will include brief lectures, demonstrations, informal pin-ups, and guided work time.

No prior experience in architectural drawing is required. Limited to 12 students. Fall semester: Lecturer Tess Clancy.

How to handle overenrollment: Priority given to ARCH and ARHA majors

Students who enroll in this course will likely encounter and be expected to engage in the following intellectual skills, modes of learning, and assessment: Hand drawing and sketching, digital drawing, 3D modeling. Assessment is based on level of exploration, quality of craft, openness to feedback and willingness to engage in an iterative process.

Permission is required for interchange registration during the add/drop period only.
