What is possible when we relate to a landscape and our environment with photography? What insights emerge when we reconsider our interconnection with the biosphere through a photographic practice? Where do our photographic tools come from? What can the camera reveal that we can’t see with our own eyes? What constitutes a landscape in the first place?

This intermediate studio course emphasizes the creation of photographs as a mode of inquiry into ecology, place, and relation. Students will experiment with alternative photographic processes, analog, and digital photography. Examples of guided prompts include working with local plants to create phytograms, performing in the landscape, and working with the weather to explore chance and photographic materiality, to name just a few.

Through regular discussions of student works, artworks and texts, students will work towards developing a body of work of their choosing.
