Music 274 - Experimental Electronic Instruments
M/W | 1:05 PM - 3:05 PM
(Offered as ARHA 274 and MUSI 274) In this studio art course, we will consider how humans interface with technology for the purpose of aesthetic expression. Students will build sound-making devices of their own design by combining software audio synthesis (using visual control-flow programming languages) with hardware microcontrollers, sensors, lights, and sculptural materials. Accompanying readings draw from artists’ writings and media theory to contextualize collective exploration. Students will be expected to engage in technical and conceptual experimentation and present their research to the class for studio critique. Prior experience with music or programming is helpful but not required.
Fall 2026: Assistant Professor House.
How to handle overenrollment: Priority will be given first to ARHA and MUSI majors. Attendance on the first day is required; seats available during Add/Drop will be assigned on first-come, first-served basis
Students who enroll in this course will likely encounter and be expected to engage in the following intellectual skills, modes of learning, and assessment: Audio-based studio art projects, in-class critiques including aural and visual analysis, audio synthesis, basic electronics, oral presentations
