What are the benefits of a collaborative creative process in a dance repertory project for the dance student/performer? What cultural contexts become embedded in a repertory work through the various dance and movement backgrounds and personal histories of each contributor? What do we each bring to the process, and how can we approach the making of a choreographic project as an inclusive practice? Finally, what curiosities and inquiries can we investigate together in a unique creative process? In this studio course, we will address these and other questions through the creation, rehearsal and performance of a new dance theater work, collectively generated by the course participants and the instructor, or as part of the annual Five College repertory project, and culminating in live performances. Students will also have the opportunity to increase their expressive range, technical skills, and versatility, while deepening their understanding of shared artistic practices. To explore historical, cultural and artistic contexts for the creative work, assigned readings and discussion will inform independent research, culminating in in-class student presentations and/or writing. Significant additional rehearsal time outside regular class meetings will be required. Admission to the course is by Five College Dance audition, to be conducted during the prior Spring semester and/or the start of the Fall semester. Permission required to register. This course may be repeated for credit. Fall semester. Prof. Monteiro and Five College Dance Lecturer Torres.
