Collage has been often defined as a modern practice, yet examples of this art form go as far back as the invention of paper. From 10th century Japanese calligraphers to Picasso and Braque to memorabilia hobbyists, there is no end to the possibilities this mixing of media and surfaces can employ. This course examines the possibilities of disrupted meaning, non linear design, and theoretical conception involved with this art form. We will explore the many facets of this multi layered approach to art making through slide shows, readings, and research. Paper, memorabilia, newspaper, photographs, found objects, and cardboard are some of the materials we will be working with as well as a variety of adhesives. We will discuss the implications of image appropriation, the benefits of large and small scale works and the sculptural implications of layering surfaces. They will also keep a collage sketchbook/ journal to supplement their larger works and document their thinking in regards to the projects assigned.
Arts, Design, and Media Independent Work Multiple Cultural Perspectives Students will work a minimum of 8 hours outside of class per week.
