This class will study the "Domestic Slave Trade" in the modern era in the American Republic, with particular focus on the development and growth of the "Domestic Slave Trade (Interstate Slave Trade)" in the United States. Beginning with a cursory exploration of the British North American colonies, the evolution of the Atlantic Slave Trade, and of the plantation system in the United States, students will examine the socio-economic and political factors surrounding the "Interstate Slave Trade." Importantly students will investigate the ways in which the "Domestic Slave Trade" impacted African American families, ending with the Movement to abolish slavery in the United States and the American Civil War.
