In this edition of Photo I, the Fall 2024 semester will be broken up into two thematic explorations. In the first, we will explore the potential of the medium to act as a mirror in reflecting our thoughts, feelings, and related states of our subjective experience. Building off this experience, the second half of the semester will focus on the world in which we find ourselves. This is primarily an analog-based course with work produced for it using a 35mm film camera and images printed in a darkroom setting. We will cover all the basic camera functions, framing and composition, working with ambient and artificial lighting, darkroom printing, and sequencing photographic series. Students may choose to work with 35mm or medium format analog cameras to complete their projects. Later in the semester, some digital hybrid practices will be introduced-such as scanning film and basic editing of monochrome images in Photoshop. Technical labs will consist mostly of analog workflows with limited digital practice introduced late in the term. Please note, students attend only one of the two lab sessions per week. In concert with technical aspects, we will consider historic and contemporary photographic practices and photographers. Through readings, discussions, and critiques, students will learn how to critically read and interpret photographs while producing meaningful photographic work. Keywords: photography, 35mm, darkroom

Time and Narrative Lab/Materials Fee: $65.00 Students should expect to spend 8 hours weekly on work outside of class time
