An independent study is a semester-long academic endeavor planned in conversation between a student (sometimes a group of students) and a faculty member. Faculty permission is required. In some cases there may be an additional person(s) from the Hampshire community participating in the independent study as a mentor. Hampshire recommends four credits for a successfully completed independent study. It is equivalent to taking a course in terms of academic rigor and time commitment (generally 180 hours of academic engagement) and counts towards full-time enrollment for Hampshire students. Hampshire students engaging in an independent study with a Five College faculty member must register via the Five College request system during published registration periods. To Register: Hampshire Students go to the "course registration, information and forms" page on the Hampshire College website and complete the independent study registration form. Five College students request the independent study via their home institution's request system and complete the form on "course registration, information and forms"--"five college students" on the Hampshire website
Permission is required for interchange registration during all registration periods.
