This course will provide a strong overview of bioremediation and how microbes can be leveraged to remediate the environment. We will explore the fundamentals of microbiology, common tools and techniques, the chemistry of the chemicals, kinetics and mechanisms for degradation, biogeochemical cycles, natural attenuation, and weekly topics which highlight specific types of bioremediation challenges. These weekly topics will include bioremediation pharmaceuticals, emerging contaminants or emerging concern, brewery wastewater, and environmental disasters. This course is designed to run in partnership with Plant Chemical Ecology with a coordinated lab. For the fullest experience, students are encouraged to take both courses. Keywords:Bioremediation, Microbiology, Environmental, Ecology, Chemistry
