This course examines the role of archives and collections as sources of inspiration and materials with which to create. Through assigned media, artist/exhibition case studies, visiting artist talks, and creative workshops leading up to a final project and exhibition, students will gain a working definition of the archive and interdisciplinary strategies for exploring this theme in their work. The goals of this course are to: explore ways to engage with the archive, including appropriation, interpretation, reconfiguration and interrogation; unpack strategies for making meaning through the accumulation of images/objects; and utilize the language of display to imbue work with layers of meaning.
Nomination by the art departments of each of the Five Colleges. Limited to 15 students, with spaces reserved for 3 students from each of the Five Colleges. Students enrolled in this course will be responsible for some of the costs of materials.
