Through the course of the semester, students will consider the many histories, experiences, and cultures that shape and define the ever-changing, ever-evolving field of Asian/Pacific/American (A/P/A) Studies, an interdisciplinary space marked by multiple communities, approaches, voices, issues, and themes. The course will cover the first wave of Asian immigration in the 19th century, the rise of anti-Asian movements, the experiences of A/P/As during World War II, the emergence of the "Asian American" movement in the 1960s, and the new wave of post-1965 Asian immigration. Topics will include but are not limited to racial formation, immigration, citizenship, transnationalism, gender, and class. Note that in the first 9 weeks of the course, the Tuesday class meets at 7:30-9:30 p.m. instead of the usual 3-4:50 p.m. During these evening sessions, students will be attending a series of lectures given by A/P/A scholars in the Five Colleges. Enrollment limited to 20.
