The world as we know it today has been shaped by European colonial and imperial policies of the post-15th century. Most colonial histories are written by the colonizers. Archaeology provides us with a tool to examine colonialism from multiple viewpoints, as we study culture change from a material and spatial perspective. In this course we will examine the archaeology of colonial encounters. We will compare historic and archaeological perspectives on the colonial past, and examine how our narratives have meaning in the contemporary world. Special attention will be paid to the case of Latin America. (E)
