Emphasizing discussion and short written assignments, these colloquia have as their goal the development of art historical skills of description, analysis, and interpretation. Unless otherwise indicated, each section is limited to 18, normally first years and sophomores. What roles have the visual arts played in the organization and understanding of various cultures around the world? Focusing on selected important monuments and figures -- from antiquity to the present ? we will rely on close looking and contextual explorations to reveal the ideas, beliefs, histories, and emotions inscribed by humans in their material world. Examples drawn from Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Limited to first-years, sophomores.
