This course examines how humans have changed Earth's biosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere, particularly over the last century, and the social, scientific, and political challenges posed by these environmental alterations. We will reflect on how differing worldviews have influenced our past actions and may determine our future trajectory. Readings and discussions will examine scientific evidence, policies designed to improve the environment, and national and international responses to the environmental crises that confront humanity. Students will investigate strategies for mitigating damage, conserving resources, and restoring natural function of the Earth. Enrollment limited to 60. (E)
