Landscape Studies is a burgeoning field at Smith College and is the first program of its kind at a liberal arts college in this country. This introductory course will be a chronological and thematic exploration of the issues that define the evolving field of landscape studies and the study of the built environment. How have landscape architects, horticulturists, engineers, and urban, regional, and environmental planners reshaped the spaces in which we live? What stewardship is needed for us to be both inspired and sustained by the world around us? Topics from around the globe will range from ancient to contemporary, scientific to artistic, cultural to political, and theoretical to practical. Priority given to first years, sophomores, and LSS minors. Enrollment limited to 30.
