Art History 280 - COLQ:MAKING/MODERN VISUAL CULT

Topics Course This course traces the historical origins of the image-saturated world of today, examining the evolution of philosophical and scientific ideas about visual perception and the development of visual technologies and practices that laid the foundations for modern spectacular society. As such, the course introduces students to a broad range of non-artistic imagery and vernacular visual practices, from postcards to people-watching. Its key aim is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to critically assess the role of the visual in defining what it means to be modern. Prerequisites: one 100-level course or permission of the instructor. Enrollment limit of 20. Group III
